Designed in 2015
Current clinic environments are suitable for an era when patients were passive care recipients. To increase patient activation, interaction and motivation in their own care, especially in chronic disease, we need to design new care environments. As such, rethinking clinic spaces in the community hospital for the evolving needs of our patients is crucial. Using ethnographic methods in our research, we sought to uncover patientsʼ unarticulated needs that are fundamental to the clinic design, and the requirements of administrators and clinical staff, which influence how the
clinic is run.
Taking into consideration the declining senses and functions of the elderly, designing for accessibility such as ample space for manoeuvring, visibility of available services and more importantly, the spatial requirements to enable natural mapping of the clinic to navigate through different layers of services were designed into the layout.
With technological advancements, better education and the need to meet patientsʼ aspirations, the healthcare system needs to take into consideration the evolving healthcare needs of patients to provide a holistic model of care.
